Though a nation well known for its gymnasts, only one Romanian group has competed at a Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships since 1999. That is about to change.
No question about it, Romania is a Gymnastics nation.
In the four and a half decades since Nadia Comaneci set the sports world alight, Romanian gymnasts have consistently been front and center in their respective disciplines. In Artistic Gymnastics, talents so famous they are known only by their first names — Nadia, Daniela, Simona, Andreea, Catalina — have followed one after the other, forming a cascade of greats who covered themselves with glory and honours as they rose to global prominence.
Romanians also have a strong presence in Rhythmic Gymnastics, where 1992 Olympian and president of the Romanian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation Irina Deleanu is a World medallist, Ana Luiza Filiorianu qualified to the 2016 Olympic Games and sharp individuals like Andreea Verdes and Annalise Dragan consistently perform in the most prestigious finals. Poised to join them is junior Amalia Lica, whose Junior European title with the Clubs was the latest piece of history made by a Romanian Rhythmic gymnast.
But Rhythmic Group Gymnastics? It is one of the few domains where Romanians have been uncharacteristically absent for more than two decades – until now.
At the Rhythmic Gymnastics Junior World Championships in Cluj-Napoca (ROU) 7-9 July, a young Romanian group — Arianna Alexandru, Andra Crainic, Carina Crainic, Andreea Nastasa, Alexandra Patrascu, and Eva Vencu — will begin laying the groundwork for what many hope is an eventual re-emergence onto the world scene.
Though very young — all six were born in 2008 or 2009 — by the time the championships conclude, the group will have pushed further in its short existence than almost any other from its country during the past two decades. While a Romanian Group took part in the first Rhythmic Junior World Championships in 2019, the last time a Romanian group performed at a senior World Championships was in 1999.
Formed at the end of 2022 with the objective of representing the host nation honorably at the Junior Worlds, group members, all hailing from Bucharest and Arad, have prepared diligently to represent Romania well. At their first Junior European Championships in May, they finished 11th and inside the top 10 with the 5 Ropes.
It felt like the beginning of something special. Now, with everyone from Romania’s Minister of Sport to past Olympians interested in what the Junior group has been up to, the pressure risks being overwhelming.
“We are trying to focus on what we can do,” explained Carina Crainic, who along with her twin sister Andra forms one third of the team. Twins Alexandra and Irene Patrascu are also part of the junior national team, though only Alexandra is likely to perform in Cluj-Napoca.
The sisterly dynamic among team members provides an added dimension of security, Patrascu noted, and has helped the gymnasts become more adept at managing expectations.
“It is very nice,” she added, “because we understand one another. If there are small conflicts between us, we try to resolve them. We see what we are trying to do.” And soon, the rest of the world will too.. -
