Gareggiando tra i suoi eroi nella sua prima Coppa del Mondo senior a Sofia a marzo, la diciassettenne ha più che resistito. Raffaeli è stata una delle rivelazioni di Sofia, dove ha preso l'argento con le clavette e il bronzo con il nastro per routine squisitamente dettagliate, infuse di un senso di sensibilità artistica e musicale raro anche tra le ginnaste ritmiche.
"Non mi aspettavo medaglie; l'unica cosa che volevo era fare i miei esercizi al meglio", ha commentato Raffaeli, che proviene da Chiaravalle sul mare Adriatico e fa 100 chilometri al giorno per Fabriano per allenarsi dall'olimpionica 2012 Julieta Cantaluppi. "Ho provato tante emozioni! È stato incredibile competere con le più grandi ginnaste che ho sempre ammirato, osservato e preso come esempio".
Figlia di una madre ballerina e di due genitori che adorano la musica classica, Raffaeli ha catturato per la prima volta l'attenzione vincendo tre medaglie d'argento ai Campionati del Mondo Juniores 2019 a Mosca. Ora sta percorrendo la stessa strada percorsa dalle medagliate mondiali Alexandra Agiurgiuculese e Milena Baldassari, che negli ultimi quattro anni hanno elevato la ginnastica ritmica italiana a livelli più alti che mai.
L'Italia ha già qualificato due ginnaste ritmiche individuali ai Giochi Olimpici di Tokyo, ma non si sa ancora chi rappresenterà l'Italia ai Giochi. Mentre Raffaeli non esclude una corsa olimpica quest'anno, sta facendo le cose un passo alla volta.
"Il mio primo obiettivo quest'anno, come ogni anno, è migliorare me stessa", ha detto. "Penso che nella ginnastica come in tutti gli sport, la sfida più importante ed emozionante sia superare costantemente il proprio limite. Uno dei miei obiettivi e delle mie speranze è ovviamente quello di competere ai Giochi Olimpici quando la federazione mi considera pronta per questa competizione ".
Nella sua seconda Coppa del Mondo, Raffaeli spera di raggiungere con il cerchio e la palla ciò che ha realizzato con clavette e nastro a Sofia, implementando i miglioramenti apportati durante l'anno della pandemia. "È stato molto difficile per me non gareggiare perché l'adrenalina che sento sul tappeto è essenziale", ha detto. "Tuttavia, ho approfittato di questa pausa forzata per migliorare molti elementi come le difficoltà di corpo."

After a star turn at last month’s Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup in Bulgaria, Italy’s Sofia Raffaeli is turning her attention toward more success at this weekend’s Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup in Tashkent (UZB).
Competing amongst her heroes in her first senior World Cup in Sofia in March, the 17-year-old more than held her own. Raffaeli was one of the revelations of Sofia, where she took silver with the Clubs and bronze with the Ribbon for exquisitely detailed routines infused with a sense of artistic and musical sensibility rare even among rhythmic gymnasts.
“I was not expecting medals; the only thing I wanted was to perform my exercises at my best,” reflected Raffaeli, who hails from Chiaravalle on the Adriatic Sea and commutes 100 kilometers a day to Fabriano to be trained by 2012 Olympian Julieta Cantaluppi. “I felt so many emotions! It was incredible to compete with the biggest gymnasts whom I have always admired, observed and taken as an example.”
The daughter of a ballet dancer mother and two parents who adore classical music, Raffaeli first captured attention by winning three silver medals at the 2019 World Junior Championships in Moscow. She is now traversing the same road traveled by multiple world medallists Alexandra Agiurgiuculese and Milena Baldassari, who during the past four years have elevated Italian Rhythmic Gymnastics to greater heights than ever before.
Italy has already qualified two individual rhythmic gymnasts to the Tokyo Olympic Games, though who will represent Italy at the Games is still unknown. While Raffaeli does not rule out an Olympic run this year, she is taking things one step at a time.
“My first aim this year, as every year, is to improve myself,” she said. “I think in Gymnastics as in all sports, the most important and exciting challenge is to constantly go over one’s limit. One of my goals and hopes is obviously to compete at the Olympic Games when the federation considers me ready for this competition.”
In her second World Cup, Raffaeli hopes to deliver with the Hoop and Ball what she accomplished with the Clubs and Ribbon in Sofia, implementing improvements she made during the pandemic year. “It was very difficult for me not to compete because the adrenaline I feel on the carpet is essential,” she said. “However, I took advantage of this forced break to improve many elements as body difficulties." |
