Linoy: "In real life I'm very shy. I love going to the beach because it's quiet, you can be with yourself and your thoughts. It's relaxing.
But as soon as I'm on the mat, I'm a whole different person. I'm a fighter, I fight. I show all that I've got. I'm putting everything on the mat.
I wake up at 6:30 a.m. and get ready for practice. Then I leave home at 7:15 going to Tel Aviv, where I practise from 9:00 until 14:30. Then I drive back to my club in Rishon where I practice from 15:30 to 20:00 or 20:30. I love being here because the people are good-hearted. The atmosphere is good, quiet, without too much noise. My family is here. Then I go back home, take a shower and go to sleep."
Ayelet Zussman (Linoy's coach): "When I met her dad, he told me -"I don't know what you're going to do with her during practice, but make it hard for her. I want you to challenge her, I want her to fight and I want your exercise to be the hardest"- .
I said "ok". I gave her a very hard exercise to do. I didn't think she would do it, but she did. That is how it began."
Linoy: "I started at 6 and a half years old and I've done this until now.
As a little girl, to win the first trophy was the most exciting thing in the world. I remember telling myself -"That's it. From now on I only want to win trophies. I want to get back home from every competition with a trophy".-
It was so exciting and fun.
I'm from Yemeni and Greek origin. This sport is ruled by Eastern Europeans. Due to the fact that I'm not of East European origin and knowing that everyone usually thinks that the successful gymnast are Eastern European, I wanted to prove that it doesn't have to be that way".
Ayelet: "All the girls from 3 or 4 years old want to see Linoy Ashram, want to train with her."
Linoy: "It's so fun to see those little girls be like -"I want to be like you and I want to train and to be where you are."-
I have the highest level of difficulty of all other gymnasts in the world. I think you need this competitiveness in every sport because if you don't have the competition, why are you fighting?"
Linoy is not only pushed from the outside but also by her fellow Israeli teammate Nicol Zelikman. Their rivalry and strong friendship has made them both better.
Linoy: "When I was little in Israel, I used to watch Neta Rivkin. I really liked watching her compete.
Nicol Zelikman: "It is fun that we can go through this together because for example, Neta was alone most of her carrer. The fact that she did this all by herself, I can only imagine. It's so hard for us even thought we're together and I can't imagine how hard it was for her being alone.
We appreciate that about her a lot because it's a tough sport to be alone in. She was our role model."
How did you guys meet?
Nicol: "In the gym. Step by step we knew each other better"
Linoy: "We're like sisters"
Who's the funnier one?
Linoy: "She is. She's the crazy one"
Who is the more responsible one?
Nicol: "She is. We complete each other"
Linoy: "We're just together, know everything about each other. We sleep together, eat together, we're together all of the time. Our friendship is very strong.
Nicol: "[Qualifying for Tokyo together] was the goal from the start of the season at our training camp in Baku."
Linoy: "We hugged each other from the bottom of the heart and said to each other -"we did it! And now we'll keep moving on this road together!"
Nicol: "It's once in a lifetime"
Linoy: "I think it's a big experience. Just to have fun"
Nicol: "Feel the moment. And to do our best".CITAZIONELinoy: "Nella vita di tutti i giorni sono molto timida.
Combatto. Mostro tutto quello che ho. Metto tutta me stessa in pedana.
Ecco come è iniziata".
Come vi siete incontrate ragazze?
Nicol: "In palestra. Passo dopo passo ci siamo conosciute meglio"
Linoy: "Siamo come sorelle"
Chi è la più divertente?
Linoy: "Lei. Lei è quella pazza."
Chi è la più responsabile?
Nicol: "Lei. Ci completiamo"

24/06/2020
Already her country’s most successful gymnast, Linoy Ashram (ISR) is eager to use the extra time before next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games to further refine her Rhythmic routines.
“I love competing,” commented Ashram, whose six medals at the 2019 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships in Baku (AZE) was a personal best accomplishment in her four World Championship appearances. “I am hoping that this year will give me the opportunity to push myself even further and to enhance my performance level.”
In a discipline dominated by Eastern Europeans, Ashram, who is of Greek and Yemeni descent, has proven her mettle over and over. The heir to Neta Rivkin, who made history for Israel with its first World medal in 2011, Ashram has collected 11 medals of her own in four appearances at the World Championships, outpacing expectations and thrilling a legion of Linoy fans, including young gymnasts from her country training to follow in her footsteps.
2019 was her best year yet. In the Azerbaijani capital, Ashram was the only gymnast to medal in every event, collecting silvers with the Hoop, Clubs, Ribbon and with the Israeli team, and bronzes in the All-Around and with the Ball. Her ability to blaze through exercises leaps and bounds harder than her competitors has been key to her rise; were competitions decided on difficulty alone, the World All-Around crown in 2019 would have gone to Ashram.
For the shy young woman whose competitive side comes out only when she steps onto the carpet, the results are proof that Ashram is approaching things correctly. “Success is the best feedback for me,” she commented. “[The results I’ve had] show me I am on the right path and give me the drive to keep going and keep working. I have very strong willpower, and a support system that has a lot to do with my success.”
The difference a year can make
The COVID-19 pandemic altered the 21-year-old’s training plans, but not her determination. Ashram splits her training time between the national center in Tel Aviv and her home club in her native Rishon, half an hour south of Tel Aviv. Quarantine kept home for three weeks in March and April, but she was allowed to resume workouts with longtime coach Ayelet Zussman after April 20.
“During the peak of the outbreak in Israel, there was a quarantine and obviously we had to stay home, and so obviously I couldn’t do my normal training,” she said. “During that time we had a lot of Zoom training with our coaches. I was trying to do whatever I could to keep good form. I worked a lot on flexibility and apparatus work, which was actually a good thing.”
Ashram credits reigning Olympic champion Margarita Mamun (RUS) as the gymnast she is most inspired by, and counts World champions Dina and Arina Averina (RUS) as friends as well as her closest rivals. Like Mamun in her preparations for the Rio Games, Ashram knows there is still a lot of work ahead of her before she steps into the Olympic spotlight. During the next 12 months, she will employ the things that have driven her forward in the past - “my apparatus work, jumps, and competitive nature” - as she pushes toward the future.
“At first, I was a little upset when I heard that the Olympic Games are postponed, but the health and safety of everyone is much more important,” she said. And another thing: “This gives me another year to prepare myself and keep progressing.”. -

Splendida!
