Plushenko wins ninth Russian figure skating title on return
MOSCOW — Former Olympic champion Yevgeny Plushenko enjoyed a winning return to the amateur ranks on Monday when he claimed a ninth Russian figure skating title.
The 29-year-old three-time world champion, who finished second behind America's Evan Lysacek at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, confirmed his leading position after the short programme by winning the free programme to collect 269.67 points overall.
The result was just 0.63 points off the mark of Canada's Patrick Chan which allowed him to win this year's ISU Grand Prix final.
"Frankly speaking I almost forgot how to compete," Plushenko, the 2006 Olympic champion, said.
"I'm still on the way to my top form and there's plenty of work to do for it. I'm happy to win my ninth Russia title and now I will start my preparations for the European championships."
Plushenko, returning to amateur competitions after his 2010 Vancouver disappointment, added that he would have to undergo surgery on his left leg after next month's European championships in Sheffield.
"I will have an operation on my leg after the European championships -- I will be completely ready for the event," he said.
Fellow Saint Petersburg skater Artur Gachinsky was second, 10 points behind the winner, while Muscovite Sergei Voronov, who was fifth after the short programme, took third with 240.79 points.
Plushenko's coach Alexei Mishin praised his skater's return at the event held at Saransk.
"Yevgeny put plenty of effort and emotion into this return. It's a real feat," he said.
Bobrova and Soloviev skate last to finish first The 2012 Russian National Figure Skating Championships began today in Saransk, Mordovia with the Short Dance event. Despite being held the last weekend before New Year, the competition attracted a sizable and enthusiastic crowd to the city’s ice palace with a capacity of 5000. Those in attendance were well rewarded for deciding to forgo last-minute shopping and preparations in favor of watching figure skating. It seemed that the skaters and their coaches drew the right conclusions from what is generally perceived to be a somewhat under whelming showing by the Russian ice dancers at the international events this fall, and all participants brought their best game to Saransk. Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev currently lead, followed by Elena Ilinykh/Nikita Katsalapov and Ekaterina Riazanova/Ilia Tkachenko. Bobrova and Soloviev were the last to skate and they capped the event with a powerful performance of their medley of samba and rhumba. The highlight of the dance were two pattern sections (the first – level four, the second – level three), which the skaters executed with excellent flow, character and unison. The students of Svetlana Alexeeva worked with professional ballroom dancers during the summer and got comfortable enough with the intricate dance movements to own the choreography and deliver it convincingly. However, they had a couple of minor glitches: they narrowly avoided crashing into each other during the twizzle sequence and had somewhat labored changes of positions during the lift. Nonetheless, they currently lead the field by roughly three points with a score of 70.23 (34.00/36.23). “We are very pleased with the performance,” said Soloviev. “Technically there was room for improvement, but emotionally it was our best performance to date.” “We are very happy to come here. The audience in Saransk is great and very supportive,” added Bobrova. “We are very happy to entertain them so well on the eve of the New Year. It is very pleasant to see so many people coming to watch figure skating. Even though we had to wait very long to skate, it was a pleasure to perform here.” When asked about a difficulty in gaining a level four for the patter dance, Soloviev explained that the main difference lies with the level of scrutiny. “It is like the compulsories suddenly developed required elements,” he joked. “Before, we never worried about the details, but now we have to do. Say, the choctaw – exactly right and precisely that wide beyond any shadow of a doubt. It is very different and there are so many different criteria.” “Previously, each sequence was judged more or less as ‘yes’ or ‘no’,” added Bobrova. When asked about their own understanding of Latin dances, Soloviev said for them “Latin dances are all about the electrical connection between the partners.” “It is a bit hard to explain,” he added. “It is a different manner of interaction between partners – not at all like the tango or waltz. But I guess we have not yet skated long enough to form a personal opinion on the matter.” “It is very difficult to transfer Latin dances to the ice,” added his partner. “The things classical ballroom dancers do on the floor are simply amazing. I love it. They just enter the floor and you are immediately impressed. I do not think that we are quite there yet, but we are working on it.” The defending national champions were asked about the gap between the Olympic Champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir from Canada, the US World Champion Meryl Davis and Charlie White, and the rest of the ice dancing field. “I do not believe in insurmountable obstacles,” claimed Soloviev. “It is a matter of knowing your weak points and working diligently on them day in, day out.” “The thing is these two teams set the bar very high,” said Bobrova. “Yes, they come up with fantastic programs each season and they skate them well, but once you start getting all those levels four and tens for components, there is not much left for you to do to improve the score. Whereas we, and I mean in general as all other ice dancers, we are gradually improving. So it is only natural that the gap is closing.” “Personally, I feel that a ten in a component score should be reserved for perfect performances,” added her partner. “Not a hair out of place. For me, the ideal is a perfect blend of technique and artistry. You should not be able to see setups for elements, for example. It should all be joined together.” The team’s highest program components score at the national championships was 9.50 for choreography from one of the judges. Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov seemed to have recaptured the feeling of connection between partners which distinguished their performances last season, however, it was notably absent at their two Grand Prix events in the fall. The playful opening “Hip-Hip Chin-Chin” samba section was especially strong, with a well executed and expressive circular step sequence. It was followed by a passionate rhumba, however, at the last change of tune Ilinykh unexpectedly slipped off the edge during a stop and fell. After a moment of hesitation, the team recovered quickly and had a strong finish to the loud applause of the audience. They scored 66.94 (33.26/34.66) points. “We are also very pleased with our performance,” stated Ilinykh about their performance. “It was very easy for us to skate today. We are in excellent shape right now. All planned elements went well, and artistically we could not have skated this program better.” “Yes, I made a mistake,” she added. “I slipped off the edge in the middle and fell, but it was merely an accident. Otherwise, the program felt great.” The team obviously enjoyed performing their program, but felt that there is room to improve. They agree that the main challenge is adopting the ballroom style for the ice. “We love Latin dances,” explained Ilinykh. “We worked with professional ballroom dancers and the things they do are just amazing. The way they move, the way they occupy the space and coordinate upper body movement with hip action. It is truly special. And it is a very hard work. We try to transfer those things on the ice, but it is an extremely challenging task. It is a completely different manner of movement. All those wide moves and difficult muscles are engaged, but we do keep working on it.” “For us Latin dances are sexy and beautiful and we love skating them,” she added. “I think we have great music and a great program, and today we delivered it very well.” On technical side, the students of Nikolai Morozov, who earned level threes for both sequence of rhumba, do not see much difference between it as a compulsory dance and as a pattern dance. “I cannot say it is a challenging dance,” claims Katsalapov. “I believe it is still the same rhumba. It is still relatively easy compared to some other compulsories. We do not feel exhausted skating it. It is just the fact that they combined two dances into one and the result is twice as difficult as either of them separately.” Riazanova and Tkachenko were able to fix some issues which led to low levels of difficulty at their Grand Prix events, however, they still only earned level two for one of the rhumba sequences and level three for the second one. The students of Alexei Gorshkov delivered a sensual and somber “Bonga” rhumba and upbeat Cuban salsa. They are currently third with 65.22 (31.86/33.36) points. “We are also very pleased with the way we skated tonight,” said Tkachenko. “I guess there are very few skaters today who are not. We are happy that things went that well. We tried our best and we are satisfied.” “There were a lot of spectators,” he continued. “I guess it is a major event for Saransk, and it will probably be even bigger in the future. Now that they have started to develop their own pair skating school. Figure skating will be “their” sport.” The team said that the new short dance completely changed the focus of the compulsory/pattern dance. “Previously, we had four sequences and the challenge has been to do them in precisely the same way,” explained Tkachenko. “Now we have only two, and even those two are set apart. Physically, it is easier, but technically it is on quite another level. And then you have to integrate it into the whole dance. Even a rhythm can be different.” The skaters, whose less frantic and more somber dance was markedly different from those of other competitors, were quite frank about their interpretation of the meaning behind Latin dances. “We have also worked with different specialists, ballroom dancers, and others,” stated Tkachenko. “The majority told us that it is not a dance about passion or love. It is simply an intercourse. This is the way it was explained to us and this is what we are trying to portrait. In a decent manner, of course.” Ekaterina Pushkash and Jonathan Guerreiro finished fourth with 60.25 points for their dance which featured two level three rhumba sequences. The dark horses of the event, the 2011 World Junior Champions Ksenia Monko and Kirill Khaliavin, are currently fifth with 58.27 points. The team had been forced to withdrew from the fall events due to Khaliavin illness. They delivered an interesting dance, however, their routine understandably lacked the polish displayed by other teams which already have several events under their belts.
I love it.
CITAZIONE
Bazarova and Larionov shine on home ice The withdrawal of the two leading pair skating teams – Tatiana Volosozhar/Maxim Trankov and Yuko Kavaguti /Alexander Smirnov (both due to injuries of the male partners) – left the field at the 2012 Russian National Figure Skating Championships wide open. Last year’s bronze medalists Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov stepped up and captured the overnight lead, however, even though the lead itself is not a surprise, the manner in which the skaters achieved it was noteworthy. The favorites are unexpectedly followed by Anastasia Martiusheva/Alexei Rogonov and Ksenia Stolbova/Fedor Klimov. Bazarova and Larionov relocated to Saransk at the end of the last season after their coach had received an offer to establish a pair skating school in the town. Despite it being a relatively recent occurrence, the local audience already feels a strong connection to the skaters and the reception they received was overwhelmingly loud. The team, who had a shaky start of the season, was up to the challenge. The 2011 European bronze medalists didn’t miss a step during their routine to Puccini’s Tosca. Even the side-by-side toe loops, usually their weakest element, were confident and powerful today. All other elements, including a level three twist lift and throw triple flip, were equally strong and the team led the field by an eight-point margin with 66.83 (35.71/33.12) points. The only minor flaw in their routine was a level two on their death spiral. “We are satisfied with our performance,” said Larionov. “We have reached the goals set for us by our coach, our choreographer, and ourselves. We have positive impressions.” “We moved to Saransk half a year ago,” explained Bazarova. “We are very happy that the audience supported us so strongly today. We are very grateful to everyone who rooted for us. However, I have to say that today we have been focused on our performance. We did not allow anything to distract us from it.” “We have tried very hard to focus on each other and the program,” agreed Larionov. The favorites of the Championships said that they regret the withdrawal of Volosozhar/Trankov and Kavaguti/Smirnov. “We have already been asked about it several times,” said Bazarova. “Frankly, it would have been much easier for us if one of those teams had taken part in the competition. We miss them.” Skating to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Martiusheva and Rogonov upset a number of other strong competitors to finish second with 60.25 (32.19/28.06) points. The students of Natalia Pavlova have been struggling with consistency ever since their second-place finish at the 2009 World Junior Championships, often failing to land any jumps or throws in a program. This time, however, the team (who won two minor international events this season – 2011 Warsaw Cup and 2011 Golden Spin of Zagreb) was finally able to live up to their potential. They began by nailing side-by-side triple Salchows and their only mistake was a hard landing of a throw triple flip, which forced Martiusheva to put a hand down on the ice. With nothing to distract from their clean lines and intricate choreography, their performance was easily one of the highlights of the event. “Basically we skated our program clean,” said Rogonov. “We have done everything we have planned, albeit with minor mistakes. We could have done better, but I guess overall we have reached our goal.” The skaters claim that they were not affected by a chance to win a medal. “Personally, I was not affected by the withdrawals,” said Rogonov. “Our task here has been completely different. We just had to skate clean, show our best, and do something we have failed to do last year and the year before that. We have not really given any thought to what others were doing or not doing.” “I believe that these two couples are out of our league right now,” agreed Martiusheva, “especially Volosozhar and Trankov. However, we have not entered this competition thinking that we could challenge for first, second, or third place. We just thought that we had to skate clean.” “The less you think about the podium, the closer you are to it,” summed up her partner. Stolbova and Klimov are also on a comeback track. The 2011 World Junior silver medalists barely had any time to prepare for their two Grand Prix events due to Stolbova’s illness. The team made a lot of mistakes in both Paris and Moscow, but in Saransk they delivered a powerful performance. At this event, however, their routine to Bolero was only marred by a touchdown on the landing of the throw triple flip. Their solid and perfectly synchronized triple toe loops were the highlight of their routine, however, with only a double twist they started off with a lower base value than other contenders. The two-time Russian Junior champions are currently third with 58.64 (29.48/28.98) points. “We are happy that even with the mistakes the program was strong and we received good scores,” said Klimov. “Of course, we could have skated much better.” The skaters also believe that the withdrawal of the leaders did not affect their performance. “If these teams did not withdraw, we would have hardly been able to challenge them,” admitted Klimov. “So for us nothing changed. Naturally, it is great that more places on the podium are left wide open. It is a lot of pressure as with time people will forget who did and did not take part in the event and only the final standings remain. I do not mean for us, personally, but rather in general. I guess you have to be realistic about your chances against such strong couples”. Lubov Iliushechkina and Nodari Maisuradze drew the first starting number, however, as one of the favorites of the event, they failed to set high standards for the other teams. Iliushechkina fell out of the landing of an underrotated triple toe loop and two-footed the landing of the throw triple flip. The students of Natalia Pavlova also received only level one for their death spiral, and are currently fourth with 57.00 (27.45/29.55) points. Another promising team from last season, Katarina Gerboldt and Alexander Enbert, also struggled with consistency. Gerboldt fell out of triple Salchow attempt and their triple twist ended up in a crash. The students of Tamara Moskvina are currently fifth with 56.67 (28.15/28.52) points. “We made some minor mistakes,” claimed Gerboldt, “however, I believe that it was our best performance of the season so far. Unfortunately, I have been plagued with injuries this year. I am still bothered by some of them, but since we have decided to compete, we will. Right now we are not concerned with placements. We are more focused on overcoming all the obstacles, but we will still try to do our best tomorrow and challenge for a place on the national team.” “We do not plan on reducing the difficulty of our program tomorrow,” added Enbert. “We will take the risk and go for everything.”
Abbiamo appena avuto a pattinare pulito, spettacolo del nostro meglio, e fare qualcosa siamo riusciti a fare l'anno scorso e l'anno prima.

Plushenko returns triumphant Evgeni Plushenko’s second comeback to eligible figure skating turned out to be as triumphant as the first one at the 2012 Russian National Figure Skating Championships. The 2006 Olympic champion currently leads the field ahead of training mate Artur Gachinski and last year’s bronze medalist Zhan Bush. Skating to music arranged by his long-time collaborator Edvin Marton, Plushenko did not appear to be a day older than he had been at this event two years ago. His strongest points remain the same: power, attack, and charisma to spare. Surprisingly, his weakest points were the jumps. The 29-year-old failed to attach the second jump to his opening quad toe loop, and with no steps preceding it, the element received a negative Grade of Execution (GOE). He also was only able to improvise a triple-double combination later in the program. Still, the eight-time national champion currently leads the field with 88.24 (42.30/45.94) points on the strength of his program components score. The panel did not quite agree on the numerical value: Plushenko earned a few 9.75s, but no10s. In addition, someone on the panel gave him as low as 7.50 for transitions. Nevertheless, there was no doubt that his performance overall deserved the highest score of the night. The skater himself remained grounded and critical of his performance. “First of all I have to say that I am happy to make a comeback,” he said at the post event press conference. “I am happy that I was able to finish the program. It was very emotional in places. Today I skated with pleasure, but it was very hard for me. I have not competed in a while. The atmosphere was great and the adrenaline rush was unbelievable.” “I would like to say ‘thank you very much’ to all my friends,” added Plushenko, who received more presents and flowers than all competitors combined. “Many of them attended the competition today. I would also like to say ‘thank you very much’ to all my enemies. Many of them also attended the competition today. Without their constant criticism, with only praises from fans, one would never achieve anything.” “Naturally, I am not in my best shape right now,” he admitted. “I underwent a surgery and I have been receiving injections. I am happy that I have made a decent attempt on a quad and that I did a good Axel. I did good spins and I am very happy with how the warm up went for me. I landed a strong quad during it.” “Everything was great,” said Plushenko. “Of course I still have a lot of things to work on. A lot of things. But mostly, my only wish for the New Year is good health. I am certainly very willing to keep on skating, to keep competing, I do have a goal and a dream, but I need to be in good health in order to be able to achieve it.” When asked whenever he counts his rivals here, especially Artur Gachinski, among his aforementioned enemies, he was very quick to deny the allegations. “He is a friend and a rival,” he said. “I have a lot positive feeling towards him, and in many aspects, I have to catch up with him. Therefore, it is great that I train alongside with him and that we share the same coach. It is very pleasant and highly motivational to see young skaters, including Artur, to put pressure on me. It is great to have such a sparring partner, but he is not my enemy. Even should he defeat me.” “I had a long career and won a lot of titles,” Plushenko explained, “so this season, even a potential defeat would not bother me. The main competitions are still ahead. I recently had a surgery. It is already a victory for me that I am skating here, no matter what the result would be, even should the quality of skating not be so great. It is a lot of risk for me to have the National Championships as the first event after a long break.” “It is hard for me to compete, very hard,” revealed Plushenko. “You forget how to set yourself up for the event and you loose your skills as a competitor, and besides I am 29 now. Previously, I could get away with merely half-an-hour of warm up, now I have to do it for a much longer time. So everything is much harder for me now, but I do believe that the best things are still ahead and I am in a very positive frame of mind.” Artur Gachinski indeed presented a good challenge and nearly matched Plushenko on the technical score. He landed a quad-double combination and received level four on most of his spins and a step sequence in contrast to level three for Plushenko. With a very strong performance, Gachinski was able to focus more on presentation and did a good job of selling his Saint Louis Blues routine. However, in terms of sheer command over the audience, he was no match for the leader. He is currently second with 83.62 (42.09/41.43) points. “I think I skated pretty well today,” said the 2011 World bronze medalist. “I did all the elements clean and displayed strong emotions. I really enjoyed the audience’s support and would like to thank them for it. I am happy that I was able to land a quad as it was hit-and-miss at the practice today. All other elements were also good and I got good levels for them. In short, I am happy with the job I did today and I hope to keep it up tomorrow.” The student of Alexei Mishin, who worked with Tom Dickson and Stéphane Lambiel on his choreography and presentation, admitted that it was a great learning experience for him. “It was something quite different,” he said. “They have such phenomenal skating skills and command of their bodies. Just to see how they could push once and complete a circle and a half is great. I would really like to learn to use edges and to spin like them.” The 18-year-old claims that he is not intimidated by competing against Plushenko. “It is a great honor for me, because he is my hero,” said Gachinski. “I’ve always looked up to him and I will do my best to challenge him. Even though I am second right now, I am not upset. I realize that I lack his power and his skating skills. It is still something I have to work on. I am not intimidated. In fact, it is very interesting to compete against him. I have tremendous respect for him both on and off the ice. He is a great person, but in competition we are rivals. I do not know when I will be able to defeat him, but I would like to think that this day will come soon.” Bush posted the highest technical score of the night and is currently third with 81.81 (42.74/39.07) points. He nailed the opening quad toe loop – triple toe loop combination, but later had a shaky landing on his triple Axel attempt. “I also think that I did a good job today,” said the student of Alexei Urmanov. “I did all the jumps well with only minor mistakes. Overall, the most important thing is that my coach is satisfied with my performance. It is great that I have been able to pull myself together and show all the things we have been working on. I would like to thank the audience for their support. It was very pleasant and I did not expect that I would be so well received. It gave me extra power and emotions and it helped me to attack the quad and the triple Axel. I am happy with the way I skated.” Artur Dmitriev delivered one of the most engaging performances of the night to finish fourth with 79.69 (40.83/38.86) points. Even though the student of Elena Byuanova did not attempt a quad, his non-stop routine to music from the Beetlejuice soundtrack did not afford the skater a chance to catch a breath. Sergei Voronov underrotated his quad attempt to finish fifth with 76.35 points, while defending champion Konstantin Menshov popped a planned quad toe loop into a triple and later doubled the Lutz to finish sixth (74.19).
CITAZIONE
Sotnikova, Makarova come back strong at Russian Nationals The second day of the 2012 Russian National Figure Skating Championships continued with the Ladies Short Program, which was expected to be the most competitive event. Of the 18 competitors, 16 worked on a a triple-triple combination during the practices in Saransk. Twelve skaters made an actual attempt at the jump combination during the performance, with eight of them approved by the technical panel as fully rotated. Adelina Sotnikova finished first, followed by Ksenia Makarova and Julia Lipnitskaia. A ‘comeback’ might be a strange word to apply to a 15-year-old, however, it fits Sotnikova’s situation perfectly. After hit-and-miss performances at the ISU Senior Grand Prix events, many were quick to write her off as another skater succumbing to puberty. However, the two-time and defending national champion proved the critics wrong and delivered a clean short program. The student of Elena Buyanova excelled on all counts. Her intricate Bolero routine had the highest base value among all competitors, albeit the second jump in a triple Lutz-triple loop combination was marked as underrotated. Nevertheless, the quality of their execution was among the best of the night. What really set Sotnikova apart from the rest of the field was the amount of details in the choreography and the level of commitment it required. After she landed all her jumping passes, the skater was finally able to relax and deliver the remaining elements to full impact. She earned 68.65 (35.70/32.95) points and an overnight lead of four points. “Today I have no quarrels with myself,” said Sotnikova. “I proved that I can do the hardest elements clean. I had a few events in a row where I failed to skate a clean short program. Today I finally succeeded at doing it and I am very happy.” “This season is a difficult one,” she explained. “I have many Senior events and then the Youth Olympic Games, but right now I am focused on the Russian Nationals. I have to prove that the hopes people rest on me are not in vain. That there was a reason why I was chosen as a face of the Rostelecom Cup ISU Grand Prix event. I have no right to let my country and my national federation down.” Still, Sotnikova denied being under a lot of pressure in Saransk. “I think I can say that I am fairly used to competing at Russian Nationals,” she said. “I had been doing it since 2009, so far it is a part of the course now.” An even more impressive comeback was staged by Makarova. The 2010 national champion struggled at her Grand Prix outings, often missing two out of three jumping passes in her short program to Maria and the Violin’s String. In Saransk, she hardly erred. The 19-year-old nailed the opening triple toe loop-triple toe loop combination, however, the subsequent triple loop out of steps was marked as underrotated. Nonetheless, with two jumping passes out of the way, the skater floated through the rest of program, fully immersing herself in the music. The student of Evgeni Rukavitsin earned 64.30 (30.90/33.40) points. “I am very happy with my performance today,” said Makarova. “I took the ice and I delivered everything. I did everything I have been doing for years and I did it well. I proved that I can compete at the top level. I think a lot of credit should go to my psychologist Rudolf Zagainov. I feel much more comfortable now. He teaches me how to fight. I have also worked with Viktor Kudryavtsev in Moscow.” Makarova said that the main goal is to become ‘robot-like’ in a good sense. “I will skate clean and avoid being nervous,” she offered. “I keep a diary now, and every evening I write down all good and bad things which happened to me during the day. It helps me to get rid of both negative and positive emotions and I feel better.” Lipnitskaia, who won both qualifying Junior Grand Prix events and the Final by considerable margins, was rock solid in her performance to Dark Eyes. She landed a triple toe loop-triple toe loop combination and a triple Lutz out of steps, stunning the audience with her phenomenal spins and flexibility. The student of Eteri Tutberidze received 63.11(33.93/29.18) points. “I was not nervous today before the performance,” said Lipnitskaia. “I am not competing for a certain placement today. I just have to skate clean. Naturally, I would love to win a title, but it is not my goal right now. The main focus of the season is to qualify for the World Junior Championships.” The 13-year-old lists Italy’s Carolina Kostner and teammate Adelina Sotnikova as the skaters she looks up to. “Adelina had some troubles with jumps this season, but she still keeps fighting till the end. It deserves a lot of respect,” she explained. Skating to Seven Years in Tibet, Sofia Biryukova fought for the landings of her jumping passes and came out victorious. The student of Viktoria Volchkova was smooth and lyrical in her interpretation of the music, but she lacks the command displayed by the skaters who finished ahead of her. She received 60.95 (31.36/29.59) point for a fourth-place finish. Alena Leonova unexpectedly stumbled out of the opening jump of her triple toe loop-triple toe loop combination (which has been her most consistent element this year), but was able to add a double toe loop to the planned solo triple flip. Though the mistake took some excitement out of her “Pirates of the Caribbean” routine, the characteristic moves and quality of her interpretation made her performance one of the highlights of the event. The 2012 ISU Grand Prix Final bronze medalist earned 59.95 (27.60/32.35) points to finish fifth. “I missed the triple-triple combination because I failed to check the rotation on the first jump,” explained the 21-year-old. “I believe the mistakes are caused by the fatigue after competing at four events this fall. The Grand Prix Final in Canada was especially tough, both physically and mentally. I really gave it my all in Quebec. I think I have not fully recovered from that performance and from all the travels yet. I have very little strength left in me, but I hope to skate better in the long program tomorrow.” Elena Rodionova rounds up the top six. The 12-year-old debutant delivered an ambitious and exuberant short program which featured a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination and a triple flip to score 59.10 (33.07/26.03) points. Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, the winner of two ISU Senior Grand Prix events, fell on her opening triple Lutz and is currently seventh (58.32 points). Polina Korobeinikova, the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final bronze medalist, landed a slightly underrotated triple flip-triple toe loop combination and is eighth (57.64). Polina Shelepen fell on both triple jump attempts and finished 17th with 45.44 points.
Devo solo a pattinare pulito. Mi ha dato tutto me stesso in Quebec. " Elena Rodionova arrotonda i primi sei.
Plushenko wins ninth national title The first medals of the 2012 Russian National Figure Skating Championships were decided in Men’s division. As expected, Evgeni Plushenko had no trouble with defending his overnight lead and won the ninth national title of his career. Artur Gachinski repeated his last season silver, while Sergei Voronov rose from fifth place to win the bronze. Skating to El Tango de Roxanne, Plushenko checked out his opening elements: quad toe loop, two triple Axels, and a triple loop, but ran out of stream in the second half of the program. He doubled his the first triple Lutz attempt and stepped out of the second one. The 2006 Olympic Champion mostly relied on his command over the attention of the audience as a means of interpretation, however, his skills in forging connection with spectators served him very well as the public responded loudly and enthusiastically to his every move. Though he posted only the third highest technical score of the evening, he won the long program with a five-point margin, scoring 171.43 points and 259.67 points overall. “I have lots and lots of things to work on,” admitted the champion. “There were plenty of issues and plenty of empty spots, but all these can be corrected. This will be my first goal after I return home and start to prepare for the European and World Championships. I will improve both the short and the long programs. I might even have new costumes and make some changes to the music.” Speaking of his performance he once again, stressed how hard it was for him to skate here. “It was very difficult for me today,” Plushenko admitted. “I skated next to last and I forgot how challenging it could be. I recalled the Olympic Games in Vancouver, I skated last there. My legs felt heavy today after the short program yesterday. But overall, I am satisfied. I did a quad and two triple Axels and I finished emotionally strong. I have only started to land quads in practices a couple of weeks before the Nationals.” “For me the most important thing was to avoid becoming a laughing stock,” he added. “There is always that nagging fear that you would step on the ice and proceed to double all the jumps. That would have been embarrassing.” At the same token, the 29-year-old does not plan to rest on laurels. “Frankly, the shape I am in now is not the one for European or World Championships,” Plushenko confessed. “It would have been madness even to contemplate it. I would have finished in 10th place, or may be in fifth or sixth. This is something I would rather avoid. But I am not afraid of defeats this season. I still have another surgery planned on my left knee. The doctors should finish working their magic and cleaning my meniscus. I hope that afterwards I will finally be able to train at full strength.” The student of Alexei Mishin expressed gratitude to his fans who supported him here at the venue as well as for those who rooted for him online. “I was surprised by how many positive comments I got on my twitter page,” he said. “And all of them are positive. Even yesterday, before the short program, I got some negative ones, but today all were good ones. I even got comments from fans in Japan. Some of them even write in Russian.” The skater said that he is looking forward to the World Team Trophy planned for the end of this season. “It would be interesting to participate in a team event,” he said. “We do have a very strong team in Russia, in all four disciplines, so as long as I improve my own level and get into better shape, I would be very interested in doing this event.” Plushenko, however, faces an unexpected challenge on his road to the ISU Championships: he does not have a minimal score which the ISU requires, and there are no competitions for Senior single skaters planned until the Europeans in the end of January. “We are aware of the problem,” said coach Mishin. “We are working on it, but I am not going to tell you what we are doing.” Gachinski, who drew the last starting number, fell on the opening quad toe loop attempt, but recovered to produce all other elements without a glitch. His program, set to the soundtracks of Dracula and Interview with Vampire, was more expressive and fluent than the ones he has had the past. However, while he posted the highest technical score of the night, he was not able to put serious pressure on Plushenko, and finished ten points behind him with a score of 166.06 (249.58 overall). “It is a pity that I missed the quad,” he told the press, “but I recovered to land two triple Axels and delivered all other elements well. I am pleased with how this Championships went for me. I skated last, but it did not affect me. I have not followed other skaters’ performances. They do not matter for me. I am always focused on myself, on my own skating. I was pleased to hear that Evgeni Plushenko considers me a rival.” Sergei Voronov delivered an almost flawless routine to Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci featuring a quad toe loop and two triple Axels. The skater still does not attempt a triple Lutz, however, he added a triple flip back into his repertoire (even though he received an edge call on it). He received 164.44 points for the long program and 240.79 points overall. “First of all I am pleased that I have been able to live up to my coach’s expectations,” said the 24-year-old. “He believed in me and I am grateful to him for the support. I am very happy with winning the bronze. The level of rivalry is very high at Nationals, and it only got higher with Evgeni’s return, so it a great result.” “The doctors did a great job patching me up,” Voronov added. “Following the Grand Prix event, I had very intense practices. I have done a lot of complete run-throughs. I plan to do the same for the European Championships after the New Year celebrations.” When asked how he planned to celebrate the New Year the former two-time national champion joked: “With Coca Cola Light. Now that I have qualified for the Euros, it has to be Coca Cola Light.” Ivan Bariev finished fourth in the long program with a passionate performance to The Phantom of the Opera in which his only mistake was stepping out of the opening triple Axel. The particular highlight of the routine was the explosive final choreographic step sequence. The 20-year-old earned 150.31 points for his effort and pulled up to sixth place overall (219.87). Konstantin Menshov delivered his typical hit-and-miss program, falling on the opening quad and later doubling a couple of easier triples. He slipped to seventh place overall (219.28) despite being sixth in the short and fifth in the long (145.09). Zhan Bush fell out of an underrotated quad toe loop in the first seconds of his routine to an unusual arrangement of Carmen, and later had several other errors to finish sixth in the long program (141.49) and fourth overall (223.30). Artur Dmitriev finished fifth (220.29) with a courageous performance in which he first doubled a planned triple Axel, but then was able to replace a planned double Axel with a triple one at the very end of the program (140.60).

Bobrova and Soloviev defend national title The second set of medals at the 2012 Russian National Figure Skating Championships was decided in the ice dancing competition. The top three teams maintained their overnight positions with Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev winning their second consecutive title in a row. Elena Ilinykh and Nikita Katsalapov captured the first silver at this event (at the senior level), while and Ekaterina Riazanova and Ilia Tkachenko settled for the bronze. Bobrova and Soloviev were last to skate in the Free Dance and their Walpurgis Night provided a great closure to the tight and error-ridden event. They were one of the few teams to avoid visible stumbles and maintained strong flow throughout the entire dance. They scored 101.24 for the free dance and 171.47 in total. “It was not an outstanding performance,” said Bobrova at the press conference. “I guess we were simply too tired after all the competitions we had this fall.” said Bobrova at the press conference. “We had to wait really long for our turn,” she added. “I had even taken the skates off and had enough time to play some games on my phone. Nonetheless, we managed to pull ourselves together. It was much easier for me to skate, both mentally and physically, than in the short dance. For me it was a pleasure. I love this free dance. I felt great and the public supported us very well. I was warmed by the thought that there were only four minutes left to go and then it’s going to be the New Year.” “We are, of course, aware of some issues we had in the dance,” Bobrova continued. “We will make some changes to the dances, replace some parts of them, make some things easier, and other things more complex. We have already changed the costumes. It was a tryout here. These costumes will stay for the European and World Championships. Everybody liked them and I also like them.” “I think it is good to change costumes from time to time,” agreed Soloviev. “It freshens up the impression.” “You really feel different in different costumes,” explained Bobrova. “Yesterday we skated the short dance in different costumes and the dance as a whole felt different.” “We still have not had time to analyze our Grand Prix Final performances and figure out what we have to work on first,” said Soloviev, about their less than successful outing in Quebec. “We only had time to do a couple of complete run-throughs since we got back from Canada to get back in shape. We will make all the necessary changes after the New Year. There is enough time left.” “It will be our first trip to England, so we are already excited,” said Bobrova about the upcoming European Championships in Sheffield. “We will calmly prepare for the competition,” elaborated Soloviev. “Our goal is to avoid making small mistakes which distract from the overall impression of the dance. I know we can do it, because we do it in practices.” Ilinykh and Katsalapov had to overcome a very long wait for the marks of the previous competitors, Riazanova and Tkachenko, before they were finally able to begin their performance. “I thought we would never be allowed to get off the ice,” joked Katsalapov afterwards. “It felt like we could have skated our dance twice during the wait.” The skaters were expressive and appropriately meditative in their interpretation of Ave Maria performed by Thomas Spencer-Wortley, but did not quite agree on what exactly their dance is about. “You know, it is a bit difficult,” said Katsalapov. “The way it was intended to be, Elena is a kind of angelic being in her light dress and I am a sinner who prays to her for forgiveness of my sins.” “Ave Maria is a prayer, so we pray,” said Ilinykh. “For everyone. It is very difficult to skate such a dance. Before this competition I could not quite figure out the emotional side of the program. I have been contemplating the music for a very long time, but I think I have finally got it. Now it is easier for me to skate.” “We skated better than at the Grand Prix events,” claimed her partner. “Our coach agrees, or rather I agree with him, because it was him who told us that we did better than before. It was a difficult, though. I do not know if it was obvious to the audience or not, but we did not have enough stamina for the free dance.” “We are perfectly comfortable with the short dance,” continued Katsalapov. “It is no longer exhausting us. We just skate it with pleasure, but the free dance is not quite there yet. But I believe that we will bring it up to that point by the next event.” “Emotionally, it was the best we have ever done this dance,” added Ilinykh, “even compared to what we do in practices.” Technically, there were some problems, however. Katsalapov stumbled during twizzle sequence, which received level three and negative Grades of Execution, and their second step sequence received only level two. They scored 95.00 for the dance and has 161.94 points in total. The skaters who used to train alongside France’s Nathalie Pechalat and Fabian Bourzat claim that they do not miss having other ice dancers in their new group. “We still watch ice dancing all the time,” said Ilinykh. “Each week there was a Grand Prix event to follow. We attend competitions, we watch other dancers practice, and we look up great skaters from the past on youtube.” Riazanova and Tkachenko were first to skate in the final group, but had a rough start to their Snowstorm free dance then they collided on the change of foot during the combination spin. “It was no one’s fault”, said Riazanova. “Just an accident. We hit each other’s blades.” As a result, the element was downgraded to level three and later they picked up another level three on the second rotational lift and level two on the circular step sequence. The low base value of the program resulted in them finishing only fourth in the free (89.49), however, they remained third overall (154.71). “We were so happy with the fact that the competition was over for us, that we hardly noticed the wait,” said Riazanova about the delay with the announcement of their marks. “But we really felt for Elena and Nikita who were on the ice.” “Everything is good,” said Tkachenko. “We are happy with our performance today. Especially considering the difficulties we had while preparing for the event. We are satisfied.” “A couple of weeks ago there was an accident in practice,” explained Riazanova. “We were working on the short dance and we moved a wrong way and Ilia hit me in the nose with his elbow. I ended up with a concussion and a broken nose.” Ekaterina Pushkash and Jonathan Guerreiro were competent and neat in their execution of the dance set to the famous Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini, and finished third in the free dance (90.32) and fourth overall (150.57). Ksenia Monko and Kirill Khaliavin remained in fifth place (146.28).
Ciò nonostante, siamo riusciti a tirarci assieme. Abbiamo già cambiato i costumi.

Bazarova and Larionov win their first national title As predicted, Vera Bazarova and Yuri Larionov captured their first national title at the 2012 Russian National Figure Skating Championships in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov rose from third to take the silver, while Anastasia Martiusheva and Alexei Rogonov slipped to the third to take the bronze. Bazarova and Larionov were focused but tentative in their performance to Lara’s Theme from the Dr. Zhivago soundtrack. Bazarova had to fight for the landing of a triple toe loop and later singled and stumbled out of the second double Axel attempt. Otherwise the team was clean and the quality of their non-jumping elements, especially the level two triple twist, allowed them to win the event by a comfortable margin. They received 126.03 for the free program and 194.86 overall. “I am somewhat disappointed with the way we skated,” said Bazarova. “We had very good practices, but today we were not able to avoid mistakes. It was my fault, I missed both jumping passes. I guess we will have to work even harder on jumping elements.” The skaters admitted to having mixed feelings about the Championships at the press conference. “You know it very strange,” explained Bazarova. “We won, people approach us and congratulate us, they are happy for us, and yet we do not truly feel satisfied because we did not skate as well as we could have.” The 2011 European Championship bronze medalists claim that were not nervous to skate at home. “We did not feel any extra pressure because of it,” said Larionov. “We stayed at the official hotel with all other skaters and we tried to treat this as any other event. But we were pleased that the audience supported us so well. After the short program we tried to put all the thoughts about the title and the fact that we are in the lead aside. Maybe we were not fully successful.” Stolbova and Klimov, who were last to skate among the twelve participants, delivered a clean program to Polovetsian Dances. The team only did a double twist, but in terms of choreography and interpretation of the theme, their routine was among the best of the night. The students of Ludmila Velikova earned 123.67 for the free, and with 182.13 points overall, won their first silver medals of the Senior National Championships. “We are happy with the way the skated tonight,” said Klimov, who pumped his fist in triumph when he saw his partner nail the landing of throw triple Salchow. “We skated a clean program which was our goal for this competition. It was our best performance of the season.” The 2011 World Junior Championship silver medalist said that being nervous was not an issue for them today. “We were not nervous,” claimed Klimov. “We had a lot of troubles at the beginning of the season. Ksenia was ill, so while other teams were worried about their nerves, our main fear was that we would not have enough strength to really attack the program all the way through.” Despite their medals, the skaters are unlikely to qualify for the national team for the European and World Championships. They plan to focus on preparations for next season rather than participate in minor international events. The immediate goal is to learn new elements: triple twist and the triple Salchow. Anastasia Martiusheva and Alexei Rogonov, were able to maintain the level of performance they had in the short, delivered the most intricate and touching routine of the night. Their program to tango music was highlighted by their excellent lines and skating skills. The only mistake came later in the program then Martiusheva singled the second planned double Axel in sequence. The students of Natalia Pavlova received 119.69 points for the long program and earned a total of 179.94. “Overall, we are happy with the way we skated today,” said Rogonov. “We were almost able to do everything we do in practices. Naturally, we are very happy to win a medal of the national championships. It is a great honor.” The skaters claimed that they have not changed their training regiment much from the last two disastrous seasons. “I could not say that we have changed anything in particular,” said Rogonov. “I guess we have simply matured. All those failures were a great learning experience. Now we have to keep this level up and deliver everything we can at every event. I hope it will be easier now.” Katarina Gerboldt and Alexander Enbert rose from fifth place to finish fourth. The students of Tamara Moskvina delivered the season-best performance of their Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which was only marred by a flawed catch on a triple twist and Gerboldt’s stumble out of an underrotated triple Salchow landing. They received 117.72 points for their effort and 174.39 overall. “Today we skated with pleasure,” said Gerboldt. “I hope that the audience was also pleased. We did almost everything we planned, except for the warm up; that was quite a disaster for me. We were in a good fighting mood today. It’s a pity that the short program went so poorly, but we are happy that we were able to pull ourselves together and kept fighting till the end.” The Championships’ debutants, Vasilisa Davankova and Andrei Deputat, posted the highest technical score of the night with a flawless performance to Nino Rota’s Romeo and Juliet. The skaters, for whom it is their first season together, nailed side-by-side triple toe loops, double Axels, two triple throws, and a high triple twist. The team still needs to develop a stronger connection to sell the theme of their program, but otherwise their presentation is also quite strong. The students of Sergei Dobroskokov scored 115.47 for the free program and and placed fifth overall (168.79). Lubov Iliushechkina and Nodari Maisuradze struggled with side by side jumps (Iliushechkina missed both) and finished sixth with 167.74 points.
CITAZIONE
Sotnikova captures third national title The Ladies Long Program at the 2012 Russian National Figure Skating Championships was a nerve-racking event, but in the end, overnight leader Adelina Sotnikova was able to withstand the pressure to capture her third title. Julia Lipnitskaia won the silver, while Alena Leonova rose from fifth place to win the bronze. Skating right after Lipnitskaia, who earned loud ovations from the crowd, Sotnikova seemed to be handling the pressure well as she reeled off a triple Lutz-triple loop combination (the second jump was downgraded by the technical panel), a triple flip, a double Axel-triple toe loop combination, and another triple. At that point, the defending champion seemed to relaxed a bit and allowed a smile to appear on her face. Her performance to Die Liebertraum began to give an impression of serenity which was lacking from her previous performances of the program. The serenity, however, came at a cost: the skater stumbled on her three final jumping passes. She finished second in the free (125.06), but was able to maintain the overall lead with 193.71 points. “Yesterday I said that I was happy because I did everything I planned,” the 2011 World Junior Champion told the press. “It’s a pity that I cannot repeat it today. I started strong, landed all the most difficult jumps, but then the things went wrong. I cannot say that I relaxed too much after the second flip. I guess I simply became too emotional, or may be I was simply too tired.” “It has not yet dawned on me that I am a three-time national champion,” the 15-year-old admitted. “It is definitely a great honor, but I still think that I should have done even better. I should have skated that second part of the program stronger to prove that I can do it clean.” The skater claimed she was not affected by the ovations earned by Lipnitskaia. “I did not pay much attention to it,” said Sotnikova. “I pretended it was for me and put it right out of my mind.” When asked to compare her performance to the previous events, the skater was not able to give a definite answer. “I did everything up to the second flip great here,” she mused, “but in Zagreb I did everything up to a Salchow good. On the other hand, I had two falls in Zagreb and here I had none. Still, I guess the performance in Zagreb was better.” The student of Elena Buyanova will now focus on preparations for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck. Lipnitskaia continued with her string of confident performances. The Junior Grand Prix Final champion made no major mistakes in her entire routine to Nino Rota’s Romeo and Juliet score. Her only negative Grade of Execution was for a wrong take off edge on her triple Lutz, however, the remaining six triple jumps were flawless. “I am very happy with my performance,” said the 13-year-old. “It was my season’s best. I was not nervous at all. For me, this competition was not about placements. I just knew that I had to take the ice and skate clean. I did it.” “I have not seen the protocols yet,” Lipnitskaia responded when asked if she was upset about not winning. “I did win the long. In the short, I had easier content so I am fine with it.” The young skater believes that she has taken after her mother in character, and was at a loss to explain how she can maintain calmness under pressure. “I do not know how I do it,” she admitted. “This is just something I just do.” The native of Ekaterinburg said that she began skating at the edge of four. “My mother saw that I was very flexible and she wanted to sign me up for something that could be of use,” Lipnitskaia explained. “There was no rhythmic gymnastics nearby, and she ruled out artistic gymnastics as she felt it was too dangerous. So figure skating it was.” Leonova was once again able to make up for the mistakes in the short program by giving a strong performance in the long. This time, however, her routine was not as flawless and electrifying as the one she delivered at the same venue last season. In the end, she only landed four triple jumps, however, it was enough for her to win her third consecutive national championships medal – a bronze (178.15). “The only thing I can say is that I have done everything I could,” the 21-year-old stated. “I am relieved that I survived till the end of the program. I am completely exhausted, both emotionally and physically.” The student of Nikolai Morozov claimed that she never intended to withdraw from the event despite rumors that were circulating prior to the event. “In Canada, I had heard that my coach almost arranged a bye for me,” Leonova explained. “I was very surprised. I had always intended to compete at nationals, so as soon as I came back, I told him as much.” “I did not even bother about placements,” she added. “I just want to show good skating. It never occurred to me to skip the championships. I see no reason why I should. I did as well as I could and I am proud of it. I certainly do not regret it.” Elizaveta Tuktamysheva finished fourth in the free program with a flawed performance to Latin medley. She nailed two opening jumping passes, a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination and a solo triple Lutz, but fell on the following triple flip. The 15-year-old also fell on a triple Salchow attempt at the end of the program. Nevertheless, she pulled up to sixth place overall (174.40). “I do not know what happened,” said the 2011 Russian Junior champion. “I guess I was tired. In all my career in figure skating, I have never had so many competitions before the Russian Nationals. At first, it was easy for me to skate, but then I realized that I was running out of steam.” “I hope that I will be able to take a rest now, even though my coach has already told me that he expects me at practice first thing in the morning on December 31st,” Tuktamysheva said. “I do hope it is a joke.” The Championships’ debutant, 12-year-old Elena Rodionova, landed seven triple jumps, including a triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination, to finish fifth in the long and overall (174.81). Ksenia Makarova was only credited with one clean triple jump – a triple loop – in her routine, and finished sixth in the long and fourth overall (175.49).
