Figure skater Ando Miki is looking forward to this year's World Championships for a couple of good reasons. For one, it will take place in Tokyo, in her native country. The other reason is that the last time the event came to the Japanese capital, Ando took the gold in the Ladies Singles.
"My win in 2007 was a sort of ‘windfall’ from a foot injury, because my injury made me really focus on what I was doing," says Ando with the bright, sunny smile that has become familiar to her legions of fans. "This time, in March, I don't want it to be a windfall. I'm working with a clear goal in sight ― the goal of standing on the winners' podium."
Ando is only 23, but it would be safe to call her a veteran, thanks to an established reputation for both her expressive and technical skills.
She began to skate from age 8 and soon made it clear she was going to become something special. At 12, she entered her first overseas competition. Success followed two years later, in 2001, when she skated in the All Japan Figure Skating Championships for the first time and came away with third prize.
Ando has since been ranked as one of the world's top skaters. Her early career often took her abroad, but she admits that her English was never her forte at school.
"Grammar is my weak point," she sighs.
When she first moved abroad in 2005, she "was so homesick for Japan and Japanese people that I hardly took a step outside," she confides.
She has had plenty of time to adjust since then. Ando has been living overseas, including in the United States and several other countries, ever since. English, she says, has become a tool she uses to help enhance her expressive skills while on the ice.. -
