La Finlandia perde la sua atleta di punta per i Campionati mondiali che inizieranno tra dieci giorni a Nizza. Si è infatti ritirata oggi Kiira Korpi, a causa dei problemi a una gamba che la affliggono dagli Europei. Il dolore, prima localizzato al piede, si è diffuso ad altre parti dell'arto, interessando anche l'anca e impedendo di fatto gli allenamenti intensivi necessari per gareggiare ai Mondiali.
Kiira aveva già sofferto di problemi fisici a inizio stagione; si era infatti dovuta ritirare dal Japan Open e dal Finlandia Trophy per un infortunio a un piede. Problema che evidentemente, nonostante le cure e la fisioterapia cui è stata sottoposta in questi mesi, non è stato debellato e anzi si è andato ampliando.
La decisione è stata molto dura da prendere, ha detto la sua allenatrice; adesso l'obiettivo diventa risolvere pienamente l'infortunio per il futuro.
La Korpi sarà sostituita da Alisa Mikonsaari, che affiancherà Juulia Turkkila

Korpi withdraws from worlds, cites leg problems
European silver medalist ailing from foot, hip injuries

(03/16/2012) - Three-time European medalist Kiira Korpi of Finland has withdrawn from the 2012 World Figure Skating Championships because of lingering foot and hip injuries, the Finnish Figure Skating Association (FFSA) announced Friday.
Coach Maaret Siromaa said (translated from Finnish): "The decision to withdraw from worlds has been a very tough one, and we all are sad about the situation. It was the main goal for the season, but there was absolutely no other choice. Now we will focus on the rehabilitation of Kiira's leg for the future."
Korpi injured her left foot last summer, causing her to withdraw from the 2011 Japan Open and the 2011 Finlandia Trophy. She recovered enough to win her third Finnish title in December and the silver at the European Championships in January, despite hurting her upper leg a few weeks before the competition.
After Europeans, the pain persisted, spreading to her hip and foot and greatly restricting the skater's training for the upcoming world championships.
Alisa Mikonsaari will take Korpi's place at worlds.
