Vincitore di quattro tappe di Grand Prix (2012 Cup odf China, 2013 Skate America, 2013 Rostelecom Cup, 2014 Skate America)

Nel 2011 si trasferisce negli Stati Uniti per allenarsi prevalentemente con Anthony Liu.
Ai Mondiali 2014 è secondo dietro Yuzuru Hanyu con un margine di 0.33 punti.
Nonostante un quarto posto ai Campionati nazionali 2014-15, Machida viene selezionato per il team mondiale, ma al momento dell'annuncio dichiarerà pubblicamente le sue intenzioni di ritirarsi per dedicarsi a tempo pieno agli studi, cedendo così il posto a Takahito Mura.

Ha studiato letteratura alla Kansai University di Osaka, nel 2015 ha iniziato un master in sport management alla Waseda University's Graduate School of Sciences.

Ha sempre citato come modello Stéphane Lambiel, il quale ha anche coreografato per lui due programmi di gara.
